Project Spotlight

With opening day just 8 weeks away, Dozer Cycle Studio was retained to bring its design, fabrication and installation know how to the former 3rd precinct building in Detroit.  The customer, Detroit School for Digital Technology, wanted elegant and "cool" to define the space.  A large common area for students needed smaller functional areas.  Curved cut out panels created semi-private meeting spaces or "cubicles" while accommodating two open doorways on either side of the room.  New study spaces, formerly jail cells, open to the front entrance needed a dividing wall, but one that would not make the cells feel remote or cut off light sources.  The cut-out steel panels were heavy enough to create the sense of a true barrier while still allowing light to pass through, and were curved so that they could be free-standing and movable for emergency egress.  Benches in each jail cell were raised to function as desks.

The transformation of the former Detroit Police Department 3rd Precinct building to the Detroit School For Digital Technology wouldn’t be complete without Dozer Strangway. His award-winning custom cycles and steel work has been displayed all across the country – from the Maker Faire Detroit at The Henry Ford to Rat's Hole in Sturgis to the October 2016 cover of Easyriders Magazine. Dozer went big and bold for the DSDT and the results are stunning (something you need to see for yourself at the DSDT Grand Opening Party). He and his wife Cate own and operate Dozer Studio out of Clawson and we couldn’t be happier they’re a part of the school's DNA." - B.J. Hammerstein, Director, Detroit School for Digial Technology 9/14/16
